Vitex, or chaste tree, is a small shrub with lance shaped leaves and purple flowers that are native to the eastern Mediterranean and easily grown in warm climates around the world. Its peppery fruit has been used for over two thousands years. It contains acubin, agnuside, casticin, chrysophanol D, alpha- and beta-pinene, isovitexin and vitexin. Uncaria tomentosa, popularly known in English as Cat's Claw, is a woody vine found in the tropical jungles of South and Central America, which derives its name from its claw-shaped thorns. Uncaria tomentosa is a liana deriving its name from hook-like thorns that resemble the claws of a cat. It can grow up to 30 m tall, climbing by means of these thorns. The leaves are elliptic with a smooth edge, and grow in opposite whorls of two. Cat's claw is indigenous to the Amazon rainforest, with its habitat being restricted primarily to the tropical areas of South and Central America. Bromelain is a protein extract derived from the stems of pineapples, although it exists in all parts of the fresh plant and fruit. The extract has a history of folk medicine use. As a culinary ingredient, it may be used as a meat tenderizer. Bromelain extract is a mixture of protein-digesting (proteolytic) enzymes or proteases, and several other substances in smaller quantities. The proteolytic enzymes are sulfhydryl proteases, since a free sulfhydryl group of a cysteine side chain is required for function.
